{"id":404,"date":"2017-05-09T22:30:05","date_gmt":"2017-05-10T02:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rgdaniel.com\/gravitas\/?p=404"},"modified":"2017-05-09T22:30:05","modified_gmt":"2017-05-10T02:30:05","slug":"catching-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rgdaniel.com\/gravitas\/2017\/05\/catching-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Catching Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been about a year since I posted anything here &#8212; I&#8217;ve been super busy doing not much of anything, but I&#8217;ve got a little time now so I thought I would catch up.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rgdaniel.com\/gravitas\/2016\/05\/makemake\/\" target=\"_blank\">last song posted in this blog from 2016 was MakeMake<\/a> ( pronounced maw-key-maw-key). Three more songs found their way to YouTube after that, during 2016, after which things dried up for nine months or so. So let&#8217;s start with those three:<\/p>\n<p>A bit of a palate cleanser, <em>&#8216;Prov &#8216;Tude in C <\/em>is a short improvised piano piece, a sort of antidote for all the meticulously architected and complexly layered songs I usually do.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_ScC5qcaHX0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>(YouTube link: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/_ScC5qcaHX0\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/_ScC5qcaHX0<\/a> )<\/p>\n<p>Next is <em>Something From Nothing<\/em> (the title a nod to both cosmology and the creative process). It&#8217;s a fairly cheerful mid-tempo groove-based thing. with a short, darker interlude. The interlude relies on some spacey audio clips made on my Mac back in the 90s, and featured in a song at the time called <em>I Don&#8217;t Understand<\/em>. More on that later.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NmhNL0Dn-xI\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>(YouTube link: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NmhNL0Dn-xI\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/NmhNL0Dn-xI<\/a> )<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out 2016, the last &#8220;something&#8221; before nine months of &#8220;nothing&#8221;, and continuing the spacey theme, a deliberately paced groove thing called <em>Sonic<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/89yENO6iyjs\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>(YouTube link: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/89yENO6iyjs\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/89yENO6iyjs<\/a> )<\/p>\n<p>After a lull of nine months or so, during which the dust cover mostly stayed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Wg3E_SBjItg\" target=\"_blank\">MIDI keyboard<\/a>, I recently got back in the saddle with another short little &#8220;palate cleanser&#8221;, courtesy of J.S. Bach.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wyh2Fs3VFTU\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>(YouTube link: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wyh2Fs3VFTU\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/wyh2Fs3VFTU<\/a> )<\/p>\n<p>Next is something called <em>I Still Don&#8217;t Understand<\/em>, which utilizes some of the same audio clips mentioned above in <em>Something From Nothing<\/em> and which were originally used in 1998&#8217;s <em>I Don&#8217;t Understand<\/em>. That song didn&#8217;t lend itself to a remake in the same way I revisited other tracks from that era, and I struggled with how to use those clips, which formed the lion&#8217;s share of the original song. This then is the second (and last) new context those clips will find themselves in.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_js7Clf2YNQ\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>(YouTube link: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/_js7Clf2YNQ\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/_js7Clf2YNQ<\/a> )<\/p>\n<p>Finally we have <em>Active Mal<\/em>, the most fully realized of the three recent songs.
